1.What is water-based ink?

     Water-based ink is a type of liquid ink that uses water as a solvent or dispersion medium instead of organic solvents, and the binders are mostly alkaline. Water-based inks mainly include flexographic inks, publishing gravure inks, and packaging gravure inks.

Water-based ink generally contain the following components: water-based resins, alkali components, pigments, solvents and additives. Water-based resins are generally styrene and acrylic resins. Alkaline components are organic amines such as dimethylethanolamine and monoethanolamine. Solvents are water and alcohol solvents. Additives include defoamers, dispersants, waxes, etc. , The performance of water-based inks mainly depends on resins and pigments.


2.What should be paid attention to when selecting colors for water-based inks?

1) Alkali resistance of the pigment

Pigment is a material that gives ink color characteristics and meets the color requirements of printing. Since most of the binder resins of water-based inks are alkali-soluble, the viscosity and pH of water-based inks need to be accurately controlled, and the pH is generally controlled between 8.0 and 9.5. When the pH value is higher than 9.5, the alkalinity is too strong, and the viscosity of the ink will decrease, which will slow down the drying speed and deteriorate the water resistance; when the pH value is lower than 8.0, the alkalinity will be too weak and the viscosity of the ink will increase. , The ink is easy to dry, which can cause defects such as dirty plate, paste plate and blistering. Therefore, pigments with good alkali resistance must be used when selecting pigments.

2) The relative density of the pigment

When the relative densities of the pigments for water-based inks are very different from each other, the pigments with low relative density are likely to float on. For example, dark green water-based inks are often mixed with carbon black, phthalocyanine blue lead chrome yellow and other pigments, which are easy to produce floating colors and hair. Phenomenon such as blooming and precipitation; when the relative density of the pigment is too large, it will easily precipitate and agglomerate and destroy the stability of the water-based ink.

3) The combination of pigments

Different pigments and fillers have different physical and chemical properties, such as relative density, acidity and alkalinity, polarity and crystalline status. Therefore, if a variety of pigments and fillers are used in the process of making inks, because of the large differences in their physical and chemical properties, even if they are stirred strongly, they can only be temporarily dispersed in the ink. Pigment precipitation and floating color will often occur after a long storage time. And other phenomena. Therefore, the types of pigments and fillers used in making inks should be as few as possible. But sometimes in order to meet the requirements of hue and performance, several kinds of pigments have to be selected.
